Finished IdleCoin for MizJam1
I love the under 48 hours over a week format! I am working full time, so it was helpful to be able to slip in sessions around normal life.
Learnings
I've learned a lot of @miziziz channel. Firstly was to pick a color palette
and embrace that restriction.
With art, color, and music pre-made, this helped me to control the scope of the project and to finish it.
Making a game is overwhelming for me. These restrictions are helpful.
My first game jam, I missed the submission deadline by a few hours because of timezones. From that, I decided to start packaging my game a day early... and that turned out to be a good call...
Building for windows
It took me 7 hours to prepare the Windows executable.
I was really surprised that Unreal Editor cannot build for arbitrary platforms,
so you have to own and setup a) Windows b) Linux and c) Mac
I am on a Mac. I spent about 7 hours of this jam learning to use a Cloud GPU computer
with Windows Server 2019 over Microsoft Remote Desktop.
A lot of this time was waiting for files to transfer.
A big learning was to not zip up my project directly and push around 1+ gig of data.
I finally found File > Package Project > Zip which created a tiny 26 MB file. LOLz.
The computer has a GPU and is really solid. It costs about 70 cents per hour.
This is very cool. I know have a better understanding of why these Cloud gaming platforms
are popping up. I will try to connect my Oculus Quest to this machine, which would open up
a lot of possibilities.
Success
This isn't the best game, or incredibly original, but it feels great to finish and submit.
I learned a lot. Thanks Miziziz!
